Poker players back Sentinel AI in seven-figure seed round

Phil Hellmuth, Alan Keating, Cary Katz and Jeff Gross backed Sentinel AI in a seven-figure seed round. The startup tracks retail investor sentiment and narratives for public companies and their investor relations teams.

Sentinel AI has raised a seven-figure seed round with backing from Phil Hellmuth, Alan Keating, Cary Katz and Jeff Gross. The startup tracks retail investor sentiment and narratives around publicly traded companies, aiming to give investor relations teams earlier insight into stories that may affect a stock.

The company monitors social media and online news for shifts in sentiment and emerging narratives. Its platform is intended to help public companies and their investor relations teams identify what is influencing investors and prepare responses in real time.

Poker investors and the company

Katz invested through Dream Ventures, where he is a general partner alongside Richard Blankenship. Gross invested as a general partner in Accretion Capital. Hellmuth and Keating also backed the startup.

Hellmuth said his experience reading opponents informed his interest in the company. “I’ve built my career on reading people at the table, and Sentinel reads the whole market the same way, catching the stories retail investors trade on before Wall Street sees them, so this was an easy call for me,” he said.

Keating gave a shorter explanation for investing: “It'd be dumb not to.” Gross said retail investors’ role in the market was a factor in his decision. “The biggest edge in any game is better information, and with retail investors now driving over a third of all trading, Sentinel gives public companies an edge they’ve never had before, which made backing it with Accretion a no-brainer,” he said.

Sentinel AI says retail investors account for 36% of stock market trading activity. The platform’s process is described as “Detect, Verify, Act”: identify a narrative or sentiment shift, verify it and provide investor relations teams with information and draft responses to address it.

Growth and leadership

Since launching earlier this year, Sentinel AI has onboarded more than 200 public companies, which together represent over $250 billion in market capitalization. Founder and CEO Krishan Arora said the company has also partnered with many of the nation’s leading investor relations firms.

“We look for founders solving a real problem in a massive market, and the speed at which public companies and IR firms have adopted Sentinel told us this team knows how to play a winning hand,” said Blankenship, a general partner at Dream Ventures.

Arora said poker and entrepreneurship both involve “making the right decision with incomplete information.” He previously founded The Arora Project, a fundraising media agency that raised and invested more than $125 million before its acquisition by Republic.com in 2022. Arora is a Harvard economics graduate and has written for Forbes about lessons investors can take from poker.
